Finding Your Face Shape

Hey everyone! Today, we're talking about face shape. I know what you're thinking, "What does face shape have to do with fashion?" Well, a lot actually! Your face shape defines what shape glasses you should be wearing, how you should style your hair, and even what kind of hats will look best on you, so, without further ado, here's how you find your face shape.

Materials:
measuring tape
pen
paper

1. Measure across your forehead at the widest point and write it down.
2. Measure the distance between your cheekbones at the widest point and write it down.
3. Measure your jawline at the widest point and write it down.
4. Measure the distance between your ears by putting the ruller just under your eyes and write it down.
5. Measure from your hairline to your chin and write it down.
6. Find the ratio of #4:#5 it should either be 1:1.5, 1:1, or 1:2

1. Heart: 1>2>3
The best way to go is long on top and shorter on the sides. If you do decide to go for a shorter style, ask for a square haircut to try and balance the face shape.

2. Square: 1=2=3 ratio is 1:1 or 1:1.5 (angular features and jawline)
The best hair cut for this face shape is one that is softer on the sides to round out the face and short cropped to accentuate your features.

3. Round: 1=2=3 ratio is 1:1 (soft features and jawline)
It’s important to choose a style that can be worn with some height. Try to avoid sharp fringes as they accentuate the roundedness of the face shape.

4. Diamond: 2>1=3
Try choosing a haircut with a swept fringe and layers on top to add volume. Avoid going too sharp around the edges as this will make the ears stick out.

5. Oblong: ratio is 1:2 (sometimes between 1.5 and 2)
For your haircut it's all about balance. Don't mind the sides too short or the top too long. You want to decrease the apparent length of your face. Just keep that in mind.

6. Oval: ratio is exactly 1:1.5
Congrats! You have the perfect face shape. Basically anything looks good on you. The only thing you have too avoid is full length fringe on your hair because it can make your face look rounder.

Style Scale: A New Aproach to Fashion

Hey everyone! I recently had a new idea about how to explain fashion and, for lack of a better word, fanciness. Imagine this scenario: Your friend comes up to you one day and asks, "Hey, I know you read Suit Yourself Fashion, so could you tell me what to wear to this play I'm seeing downtown?", but instead of launching into a long explanation about fashion you simply say a number, "three", and he walks away satisfied. My idea makes that possible. Introducing, The Style Scale:

1. Workout
2. Casual
3. Business Casual
4. Informal
5. Formal

Each of these levels encompasses a range of clothing, but it makes it much simpler than trying to explain every item of clothing your friend needs to wear. Furthermore, we plan to use the style scale on the blog, so now, without further ado, the style scale levels:

1. Workout
As covered in our most recent My Style Monday, workout clothes are a separate set of clothing one uses when working out. This includes tight polyester shirts, sweatpants, gym shorts, running shoes, sports socks and white socks. I can not emphasize this enough: These are gym clothes. DO NOT wear them outside of the gym or off the track. Too often I've seen guys walking around looking like they just finished a workout. What do we associate with workouts? Sweatiness, dirtiness, labor. Not things you want to be associated with, so please, leave your gym clothes for the gym.

2. Casual
These clothes are the lowest level of the style scale that can be worn outside of working out. This includes t-shirts, sweatshirts, jeans, shorts, and sneakers. These can be worn at times when you aren't going anywhere special. Although some people may wear more fancy clothes in general, remember that it's nice to change it up sometimes and be casual for a change.

3. Business Casual
When in doubt, dress business casual. It's a little dressy, but still laid back enough to adapt to any situation. This is what we wear most of the time. button down shirts, khakis, sweaters, polo shirts, and cardigans are all staples of this adaptable level. Whether going out for a day in the city or just to lunch with some friends business casual is the perfect mix of laid back and nice.

4. Informal
Don't be fooled by the word "informal", this level on the style scale is one of the highest ones. It includes: suits, ties, blazers, and collared shirts. Also known as business formal, it is what you would wear to a nice event like a fancy dinner, a business meeting, an opera or ballet, and even some weddings.

5. Formal
This is the highest level of formal wear. Often worn to Gala's, premier's, award shows, or formal dances, this level includes tuxedos, cummerbunds, bow ties, and vests. Considering the high cost of many of these items, many choose to rent their formal wear when they need it. Don't worry, most events that require formal wear send out invitations well in advance.

My Style Monday #6

Welcome to the sixth My Style Monday! Today I will be going over my workout gear. I tend to still match colors just because it looks better! Most of the products I buy come from Nike.

Shirt:
I tend to wear either a long sleeve or short leave dry-fit shirt. These help contain sweat, and look better due to the tight fit. I buy Nike products.

Shorts/ Pants:
I usually go with normal Nike shorts. They are a great wear and help cool you off, while still looking great. The sweatpants are what I usually wear while running on cooler days.

Shoes:
For working out I usually wear a nice pair of Nike shoes, and for running I wear Adidas running shoes.

 Accessories:
 I usually will wear a watch no matter the occasion. For working out I use a Electronic G-Shock watch and I also wear a FitBit.

My Style Monday #5

Hi! For this My Style Monday I'm going to be giving you a glimpse into how I wear my ties. It's important to have a variety of ties for different occasions. I have both wide ties, skinny ties, monotone ties, and patterned ties, but more than having them, you need to know when to wear them.

For a more casual look with a sweater or if the rest of the outfit is monotone, I like to wear a patterned tie. It gives the outfit an extra kick of design and spices it up a bit.

For a fancier and more simple look, or if the outfit already has patterned pieces, I wear a monotone tie.

Certain colors also bring out certain emotions in people. For example, red is romantic, but it is also a symbol for power. Coincidence? I think not.

Blue is a great color for a tie. When in doubt, wear a blue tie. Blue ties make the wearer seem peaceful and trustworthy.

Yellow ties make the wearer seem radiant and friendly, but be careful it can clash with some skin tones.

Green ties are a symbol of rebirth and growth, but the can also mean economical growth. Wear a green tie to a business deal.

Brown is a solid reliable color. It shows that you can be trusted to get the job done, but it can be a little boring. Spice up a red tie with hints of red.

I hope that this post has helped you with some of your tie pairing questions. As you see above patterned ties can be paired with patterned shirts, but be careful. A good rule is to pair small patterns with large ones.

My Style Monday #4

Hello! For this Monday, I will be showing off what I wear casually in the summer. It's a simple outfit anyone can use. I usually buy all of my clothing from, Lacrosse, Merona, American Eagle & Ralph Lauren.

First off, I start with either a nice plaid button down or a two button polo. When wearing the button down, I tend not to wear an undershirt, because it may get too hot. Usually the shirt colors will be light, due to the sun.

For shorts, I will usually go the more casual route and either wear Khaki shorts, or a pair of cargo shorts. Either one looks great and they are both comfortable.

For shoes, I usually pull out a nice pair of Chuck Taylor Converse, Vans, or Boat shoes. 

I will usually go the route of a nice leather Fossil watch.

Spanish Style

Hey everyone! I'm finally done with putting together my Spain experience. I know you've been waiting for me to post it for a whole week, so here goes:

Spain was an amazing place with a lot of different fashion to analyze. In order to do it properly I've split it up into three parts:

Basic Style: Here I show how fashion in Spain reinforces basic fashion techniques.
Spanish Specials: Here I talk about unique styles that I saw in Spain.
Stores: Here I give you a glimpse of what stores in Spain are selling.

Basic Style
In Spain, I saw a lot of great examples of people abiding by the basic rules of fashion. After all, that's what makes you look good in the long run. Here are some pictures of people who know how to keep it classy. The two men on the right are sporting a more business oriented look with navy suits, white shirts, dark ties, and black oxfords or loafers. These well-fitted suits really complement their physique. On the left side we have a very different style, but still one that follows the basic rules. They each have a basic color scheme with well fitting clothes and accessories that complement their outfits.

Spanish Specials
In Spain I saw a lot of diversity in fashion, but a few things stood out to me. The first thing I noticed is a lot of men wore bright colored pants. These came in a variety of colors from blue to green to orange, but the most popular colors were red and white. I know that some people in the states also wear colored pants, but in Spain I came upon it so often that I thought it was important that I mention it. Here are some guys who are rocking red and white pants.



Another thing I noticed in Spain is the interesting trend of wearing more sporty shoes with more formal outfits. The only way I can really explain these shoes is by calling them fancy running shoes. Spain's mountains and small cobbled roads make comfortable shoes a necessity, but for people who want to look professional, sneakers aren't an option, so they created these:

It's really interesting that the geography of a country can influence it's fashion, and I found that climate makes a big impact on how people dress too. Because of the infamous unpredictability of Spanish weather, many people walk around prepared to be suddenly plunged into colder temperatures. This usually entails wrapping a scarf around their neck in a style we associate with preppy magazine models and boat captains, but there it's the norm. Take a look:
I also saw a lot of people sporting shorts, but not only were these shorts prep length, they were also rolled up higher. It seems even the locals can feel the heat. Check it out*:

Finally, I noticed an interesting trend that I'd never seen before: the double buttoned collar. These also come with a double collar or contrast collar making an interesting change from the classic dress shirt. It is usually worn with the sleeves rolled a quarter of the way up the arm.



Stores
I think that a country's stores can tell you a lot about the cultural style. If you think about it, the mannequins and the layouts along with the items they sell are marketed to the Spanish consumer. They are meant to sum up style's that a person would want to wear. Here are some interesting clothes items in a store window that caught my attention:
